Bisque firing is the first firing of completely dry clay at approximately 900–950 °C. It makes the piece solid while keeping it porous so that it can absorb the glaze effectively.

Glaze firing is the second firing of ceramics, usually at 1020 to 1300 °C. The applied glaze melts and bonds permanently with the bisque-fired clay, making the piece waterproof, hygienic and colourful.
